Jekyll and Hyde: The Tale of Coexistence of Light and Darkness Behind the brightest light lies the darkest shadow. |

"Jekyll and Hyde" (hereinafter referred to as J&H) is a game that holds great significance for us at MazM.
Many people have put in effort for the game's release, and we believe that their efforts have paid off.
This grateful game is an adaptation of a short story written by the British novelist Robert Louis Stevenson and transformed into a game by MazM.
Before introducing MazM's J&H, let me briefly explain why this original story was written and how it came to be.
"Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is set in late 19th-century Britain, and understanding the characteristics and society of that era can help you better comprehend the work. The story was written in 1885, a time when the Victorian era, the heyday of the Victorian period, was coming to an end and transitioning into the modern era.
What do you know about the Victorian era?

|
When I think of the Victorian era, vivid images of its distinctive old-fashioned dresses, gloves, and suits come to mind. It also reminds me of other famous literary works like "Oliver Twist" and "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."
The Victorian era was a period when such works could emerge.
It refers to the era when Queen Victoria ruled (1837-1901), occupying most of the 19th century. It was the heyday of the British Empire, exerting the greatest influence on the world. However, as it was a transitional period from the modern era to the contemporary era, significant changes, both big and small, occurred in society.
The territory expanded, national wealth accumulated, and science and technology advanced dazzlingly. However, behind the wealth and splendor, the hidden pains began to surface one by one.

In the Victorian era, Britain experienced significant growth based on the Industrial Revolution that occurred in the 18th century, boasting its prosperity and power to the world. After the Industrial Revolution, with further improvements and widespread availability of machinery and equipment, the efficiency of production skyrocketed.
However, as Britain was becoming a dominant power, the gap between the rich and the poor widened. Despite the nation's progress, the poor became poorer, and the rich became richer. π’
While the capitalists who owned factories and land made significant profits, the less fortunate workers had to work tirelessly without even getting enough sleep to continue production.
They endured demanding labor. Before laws were enacted, they spent most of their days laboring, and it was even common for children as young as elementary school age to work. Additionally, various issues such as diseases, environmental problems, and crimes arose. π

In this era, writers who perceive and contemplate the duality of such times have emerged, and "Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" is a novel born within that current. In the game "Jekyll and Hyde," contrasting elements such as "honor and shame," "purity and depravity" intentionally appear frequently.
However, in Jekyll and Hyde, these opposing traits, especially good and evil, are not seen as separate entities but rather as coexisting within one individual. It is duality, but gathered in one place. Perhaps characters like Utterson and Enfield also possess these aspects?

In Jekyll and Hyde, there is a fascinating subject called "Dr. Jekyll's medicine" When one consumes this potion, their appearance changes, and they lose control over their inner impulses. Because it is an intriguing concept, I have also contemplated, "What kind of person would I become if I were to drink Jekyll's potion?" Embarrassingly, I have a bad habit of speaking confidently while feeling anxious inside.
I always want to show only the impressive side of myself, but I am afraid of revealing that behind that facade, there is actually nothing significant about me. If I were to drink the potion now, would I become a timid chicken, frightened and devoid of courage?
However, it seems that I currently possess both aspects simultaneously! I should play Jekyll and Hyde and reconsider the story of separation and coexistence. As I spread the wings of imagination, it may seem somewhat amusing, but it feels like I have gained a better understanding of myself.
If you were to take Jekyll's potion, what kind of appearance and personality would you exhibit? π€
Although Jekyll and Hyde are technically the same person, their outward atmosphere and appearance are completely different. Would the same apply to all of you? Or would there be little difference? And if not, would a third persona awaken?
I hope you could share that secret story with me, even if just a little!

May Birthday! Robert Newcomen π |
|
|
The person who celebrated their birthday on May 24th is Robert Newcomen from "Jekyll and Hyde" and "Hyde and Seek" π. Happy birthday to Newcomen~! π
If it weren't for Newcomen's passion, London would have fallen into even greater chaos. There are people around us, like Newcomen, who make efforts for our sake. How about expressing gratitude to them?
Although e Newcomen is currently absent, protecting the city, it seems he received lot of glasses as birthday presents. We'll have to ask later why he received glasses!
May 29th is the birthday of Justin from "Thy Creature"! Wishing Justin finds fabulous fabrics!
June 1st... It's the birthday of Ranyon, the conscience of "Jekyll and Hyde"! How will Mr. Ranyon spend his birthday?
